Upgrading the growth flows
My Role: Product Designer in Growth
Tech: iOS, Android, web
Duration: 2 years
Date: 2023- 2025
A description that might fit this role is that of a clean-up-crew. When I started there were V1 flows that had been built in a hurry.
If you are interested in a more ideal, pure process, I suggest
this project.Results and business impact
We generated significant increases in these key metrics:
☑️ Registration completion
☑️ First time deposits
☑️ Repeat logins
☑️ Website registration to app download
☑️ Refer-a-friend referrals
When I started, I didn't have the local expertise to start designing things yet, so I began building discovery files.
This involved a combination of competitive analysis, analytics, chats with LLMs and generative research.
Once I started digging into the files, it became clear they needed some updates.
To do this we started switching the files to use the new fonts, auto-layout, component libraries, and color tokens + themes.
Next, we needed to patch up the journeys. Because of the different laws in various states, there were a lot of edge cases involving registration and KYC that needed improvements to copy or the logic of how they worked.
This involved discovery of problems, then adding a new system in-app for alerts, or improving the copy or logic of the flow.
Once a lot of the critical journey gaps had been filled, it was time to redesign. We spent about two months on discovery work prior to designing.
To ensure we were on the right track, we employed usabilty tests and customer interviews.
This critical part of the app had been a major source of customer complaints. To solve it, I got access to the analytics software from the vendor, found the lynchpin data that 'broke the case' and redesigned, likely saving the company millions/yr.
Ways this job helped me grow
I was often part of a team of two designers with much to cover. We needed to be adaptible and switch our focus as priorities changed.
✔️ Auto-layout
✔️ Components and variants
✔️ Color tokens, themes
✔️ Using libraries
✔️ File management
💡 Competitive (and adjacent industries) analysis
💡 Session-cam software ( FullStory)
💡 Analytics software (GA4, Mixpanel)
🔍 Unmoderated Video interviews ( Usertesting.com)
🔍 Affinity clustering for synthesis
One big takaway is a better understanding of how scalability works when building a digital product - or just in general.
This was my second role in a startup-like environment, and I've found that I would rather be engaged in a bit of chaos than bored by routine.
Finally, I learned a lot about working remote. For instance, I found that one way to aid communication is to use my rendering skills to create small diagrams to illustrate concepts, which can be shared in chats.
